How do I get to and from Great Cranberry Island?
See the transportation page here.
We start our race late at 11:30am to give runners time to get here. Relax. It is summer
and the sun doesn't go down until late in the evening! We only offer one start time.
What kind of course support is offered?
At the start/finish/timing area we provide a fluid table stocked with water, Gatorade, and
Coca-cola. We also provide a food table for runners, with various snacks and GU.
There will also be a table for runners to stock their own provisions. Please do not take other participants items from this table.
Further down the island there will be a second table with water only.
Plan to bring your own Band-Aids, Advil, BodyGlide, and/or other personal items. (There is no drug store on GCI.)
Where should I wear my bib number?
If we can't see your bib numbers we can't time you, count laps or provide a finish time.
Make sure your bib number is pinned in plain sight on the FRONT of your running outfit
Can my friends/family come do a training run?
Yes. Many runners come out with participating family members just to do a long training
run. We welcome all who'd like to run our roads, but keep in mind that those who are
wearing bib numbers are our top priority. If you are coming to do a training run please
consider volunteering before or after.
Are bicycles allowed on the course?
Yes. GCI is a great place for bikes. You can bring them on the ferries! If you coming
from away you can rent them on MDI.
What is included with my entry?
One complimentary lobster dinner ticket, rustic camping (Saturday night only),
one complimentary breakfast ticket for Saturday morning, and one short sleeve tech shirt
is included in your registration. Shirts are ordered in advance by the size provided at
the time of registration. As much as we'd like to substitute sizes please don't ask, as
we would be giving someone else's pre-ordered shirt away. Our best advice is if your shirt
doesn't fit, ask if anyone with a similar problem might like to trade.
All finishers receive a kickass medal and a piece of the island to take home with them.
What do you mean by 'rustic camping'?
By 'rustic' we mean a beautiful field. Besides a field, we provide a rinse shower and
toilets. There are no hotels or B&Bs on GCI.
We highly recommend that you plan to stay the night on GCI after the race. If you miss
the post race party, award ceremony, and lobster bake you will be missing a big part of
the whole GCI Ultra Marathon experience!
You will need to bring everything you think you'll need to be
comfortable. We provide rustic camping space, only. At the very least, you will
need to bring a tent, sleeping bag, flash light, dry clothes, dry towel, and food.
We also recommend bringing coffee, tea, camp stoves, camp chairs, lanterns, etc.
Each participant receives a complimentary lobster dinner ticket with their entry.
(Steamed lobster & corn.) If you would like to purchase an extra lobster for an attending
friend or family member you have the option to do so when you register.
ALL lobster dinners must be reserved by July 1st. (Sorry, no exceptions.)
Our post-race lobster bake menu includes fresh caught and cooked lobster, corn on the
cob, beer and a bonfire. If you don't like beer and lobster, plan accordingly.
There is no set time for dinner and awards. (Yet another reason to plan
on staying the night.) Lobsters will cooked in waves as runners finish. If you choose not
to stay on GCI overnight, and are planning to leave by boat, you may likely miss the
lobster feed. We will not change our cooking schedule to suit your boating schedule,
nor will lobsters will not be packed up "to go." No exceptions.
BYOLC! We supply beach stones to crack lobster shells. Feel free to bring your own lobster cracker if you feel so inclined.
What is the legendary post-race party all about?
The fire side post-race revelry often goes late into the night and can be loud at times.
Don't set up your tent near the bonfire if you prefer quiet.
Even we wonder where runners get the energy to run all day and celebrate all night!
What's this I hear about breakfast on Sunday Morning?
The Great Cranberry Island Ladies Aid Society will be offering a breakfast buffet at
8:00AM on Sunday, July 22nd. Breakfast tickets are offered complimentary to participants
in the 50K who stay overnight. Additional tickets may be purchased at the time of
registration. The menu includes eggs, pancakes, French toast, home-fries, BACON, sausage,
pastries, fruit, juice & coffee - $10.00 per adult. All additional tickets must be purchased before July 1st. (Sorry, no exceptions.)
If you do not care for the menu items, please plan accordingly.
Is there anything else I should know?
The Great Cranberry Island General Store offers a variety of food and beverage items
and is located at the town dock. (The store is not open on Sunday morning, but we're
working on it!)
If you will be staying on Mount Desert Island before or after the event. Please visit
the respective chambers of commerce websites below for the three major towns on
MDI for many food, camping, lodging and activities options.
